Hope at 2nd Grade Shenanigans is having a iPhone app linky.
When I first got my iPhone, I downloaded everything I could find. It’s a bit overwhelming. It can do pretty much everything. Sometimes though, it is the things without bells and whistles that really come in handy.
Dropbox
If you don’t have Dropbox, go get it. It’s free. It offers upgrades, but I’ve been using it for a year without the need to upgrade. I save all my files on my laptop at home to my dropbox. Then, I can access them at school, on my iPhone, and on my iPad. No need to transport files yourself.
Screen shot of the app. If you press the sound icon it speaks the words for you. |

Janis at Grade Three Is the Place to Be is having a Newbie Blogger Blog Hop
1. What state are you in?
Jennifer at Simply Kinder is hosting a school memory linky. She asked what memories we have from the grade we teach. I’m going to go with 2nd grade since I haven’t moved to 5th yet and since that was a memorable year.
My second grade teacher was Mrs. Roach. Horrible name for a wonderful teacher. I was a very well behaved little girl. I never wanted to get in trouble. Having the name Mercedes wasn’t easy though. I actually remember school parent volunteers asking me if I was conceived in a Mercedes and laughing. I went home and asked my parents, “What does conceived mean?”
Well, there was one particular boy that was constantly teasing me and I complained to my dad about it. He kept telling me to stand up for myself, but I didn’t want to get in trouble.
One day, we were in line. I was standing there quietly hugging my Math book. He was running down the line and said something about my name again.
I held up my hard, thick math book and he ran right into it. BAM!
He was so angry. He went and told Mrs. Roach what happened. She looked up at me standing quietly in line and said, “I’m sure it was an accident.”
I was so relieved she didn’t ask me about it because I would have told her I did it on purpose if she asked.
My dad was very proud.
I still feel a bit guilty.
What’s funny to me is that I ran into Mrs. Roach at a conference about 10 years ago. She looked at me and said, “Mercedes, I just thought of you today!” I thought this was just being polite and pretending to remember me until she told me this story:
When I was in her class, I wrote a story. She corrected my story with a red pen. Apparently, I was brutally honest and direct as a kid too. I went up to her and told her, “Mrs. Roach, I worked really hard on this story and I don’t appreciate you writing all over it with a red pen.” She said I was so sincere and polite about it that she stopped using red ink to correct student work. That day she used red again for the first time in years and thought of me.
I didn’t have the heart to tell her she missed my point. I didn’t want her writing on my story at all. The color didn’t matter. I don’t remember the incident, but I knew instantly the story was true.
I never write on my students stories. I’ll have a conference and have them correct their own mistakes. I only edit their paper myself if I ask permission first. I didn’t realize until I saw her that that was rooted somewhere in 2nd grade.
I also tend to correct in colors other than red, so maybe she did partially understand.

I'm ready for some independent students! Most of my students are learning to speak English and have to be taught to understand jokes. I can remember one second grader asking me often, "Are you being sarcastic?" He'll be in 5th next year, I think. If I have him next year, I'm expecting him to know and not have to ask. 🙂 Thanks for following.
