Photographs: Ducks and Geese

June 12, 2015 By Mercedes Hutchens Leave a Comment

When I was little, my mom and her friend would meet up at this little restaurant by the water and send my friend and I to feed the ducks.  Very rarely did any of the restaurants day old bread make it into the beak of a duck.  The geese always bullied their way to us and usually stole the bread from us before we knew what happened.

Since then, I’ve been a little afraid of geese.  I find this strange about myself.  How can I be OK with swimming in the ocean and going in a shark cage but geese give me the jitters?
On Wednesday, my friend and I met up at the staff room to clean it.  After a few hours breathing in the dust of old dictionaries that really needed to go, I needed some fresh air.  As I drove home, I pulled in to a nearby park and found myself taking pictures at the duck pond.
The ducks were friendly though quickly disappointed by my lack of food.  A few people came by to feed them.  I’m not sure if it is left over from my bad childhood experiences or due to an understanding of ecosystems, but I felt a bit guilty watching people feed the ducks.  Are we taking the wild out of them?

Then came the geese.  I found a bit of that fear rise in me.  They felt no need to keep a distance but I did.  (I was thankful for my zoom lens.)
Then  this white goose with beautiful blue eyes walked towards me.

“OK,”  I told myself, “You are an adult.  There is nothing to be afraid of.”

I sat down and took some fun photos and only got up and backed away a few times when they’d head right for me.  So I could get good shots… yeah that’s the ticket.
Some is a bit of an understatement.  I told myself I could only put 50 photos in the packet I posted to TpT.  After going through and deleting photos I still had 100 that I did.  I had my husband sit with me and find the best.  If you buy this set and think, I wish I had a photo of.. email me, I probably have it.
The geese were fairly friendly.

They didn’t really seem to like the pigeons.  I included a fun shot of a goose poking a pigeon with his beak.  I thought it could be a fun writing prompt.

If you buy my photos on TpT, they won’t contain watermarks.

One of my favorite moments of the day was watching a sea gull land on a goose.  The goose had no idea it was coming, and I’m not sure what the sea gull’s problem was.  Maybe a goose scared him once like they did me.  Whatever the motive, it made me laugh.  I didn’t include the photo in the set because you can’t really see the goose, but here it is.

I’ve decided that whenever I post a new set of photographs, I’m going to mark it down for at least the first 24 hours.  Be sure to follow me on the platform you check most often so you know when that happens. 🙂

Now line up behind the geese and head to my store!

Look at those teeth!!!

They are 50% off for the first 24 hours.

I’m super excited because I heard back from a few great places that gave me permission to take photos for commercial use there!  More exciting photos will be coming soon!
