Magic E

June 21, 2014 By Mercedes Hutchens 1 Comment

I love teaching kids to read.  One of the fun moments is when they learn to start reading some long vowel words.

It always starts with  “Magic E”, aka Silent E, aka Vowel Consonant E( CVC-e )… Why do we have so many names for one letter??

“The Magic E tells the vowel to say it’s name.”

One of my favorite things about becoming an intervention teacher this year was having the chance to help beginning readers again.  I posted this little video to Instagram in September when I made a Magic E PowerPoint.

Now that I’m going through things I made this year to share with the TPT community, I’m cracking up listening to the kiddos.  They were so serious.  It’s serious business realizing you can now read so many more words!

The PowerPoint is set up so the teacher can just sit back while the kids read.  First a  CVC word appears (like tap).  Then, the magic hat appears and when it disappears, there is a “Magic E” so the kids can read the new word (like tape).  I put the words in order by vowel in case you haven’t introduced all the vowels when you first use it.

This is today’s flash freebie.  It will be up for a few hours.  If you download it, please leave feedback. Thanks!

I love using Starfall when we are working on this concept.  Are there reading websites you love?

(Anyone know how to embed an Instagram video on blogger?)

Thanks for sharing. I am a middle school resource teacher and have been surprised how many struggling readers have not mastered the magic "e". I have three students who will be working on this next year so thank you for the information.
