Four Sentence Types Foldable

September 11, 2012 By Mercedes Hutchens 2 Comments

My ELD class is focusing on sentences this month.  I thought our lesson on the four sentence types would be a great opportunity for me to try out my first from-scratch foldable.
I was nervous.  Coming from 2nd grade, the idea of having them fold and fold and fold and cut from verbal directions… what a nightmare.
The 5th graders, however, ate it up.  They kept talking about how fun it was.  I love how something as simple as letting them choose the color of the paper, can make them so happy.  Letting them pick any color?  How fun.  I know some people want everything in the room to look exactly the same, but I find the kids are so much more engaged if they feel ownership over what they are doing.

The students glued them into their journals.

I love how she made it her own with the heart dots.

The students wrote the explanation on the inside panels.  Then, they wrote an example sentence on the blanks.  To scaffold it, I let them either find a sentence in their book or write one of their own.

I still think I prefer creating a printable.  I think it took less time.  The students also seemed to have a bit of anxiety.  It was the first time I heard so many of them ask, “Like this?”  I guess over time, they’ll relax a bit.

What is your favorite foldable?

It's new to me but I think the kids get something out of it. I'm becoming a fan.
