This freebie is the result of a wonderful team of teachers that I worked with for many years. We wanted our students to do well on the state test so we picked out essential skills. Then we created pretests and posttests for them. They were kind enough to allow me to use those pre and post tests to create packets for you.
I probably should be spending my time getting ready for 5th grade rather than looking back on 2nd grade, but I guess this is my goodbye process. We worked so hard creating what we called Super Star Skills, I feel like they should be shared.
One reason that our Super Star Skills were so effective, was the clear focus.
The pretest was a great way to see how much time should be dedicated to the skill and helped us plan differentiated instruction.
I created some game cards and included instructions for using them in 3 different games.
It’s amazing how giving students clear goals motivates them. We set a goal for a score for the posttest and students that reached that goal were rewarded. We did this for several years and each year the reward changed slightly. Here are some examples:
*We created a graph on chart paper and put the students names above the skill that they passed.
*The students that met the goal were given bookmarks.
*Students graphed their progress and were given a sticker on their graph if they met the goal.
*The students that met the goal were allowed to visit another second grade teacher and get something from THEIR prize box.
*Students were given a star with the skill on it to decorate and hang on a binder ring on the wall.
I included a printout and instructions for the last option.
You can go to TPT to download the freebie. You could just use the tests or flash cards, but the power is really in setting a goal and motivating the students to achieve it.
I hope you enjoy this freebie! Check back in for more Super Star Skills. I’m working on Syllables and Prefixes right now and should have them up soon.
I’ve had some fun lately creating surfboard graphics like the one for my signature. I’m sure I’ll use them to create something fun for 5th grade soon.
