Fractions. Wow. I had no idea when I asked to move to fifth grade that is would be all about fractions.
There are so many little areas that my kiddos get tripped up on. I miss the days when the hardest thing my students struggled with was borrowing.
Well, my latest set of task cards came about when my kiddos struggled with adding fractions with unlike denominators. Sooo many little steps. Finding a specific denominator tripped some kiddos up so I’ve been suggesting they try this set of task cards.
I’ve been considering teaching the butterfly method that I saw on Pinterest. Have any of you tried it? Was it successful? Sometimes I’m afraid that teaching too many strategies can overwhelm them. I’m also concerned that this method means more need for simplification than finding the lowest common denominator.
