As I’ve been wrapping my mind around the fact that I’ll be teaching 5th grade instead of 2nd, there is a lot I need to change. But I’m stubborn and there are things I love and don’t want to change.
In second grade I LOVED my clip chart. I love how positive it is. I love that I barely have to do anything. I love that the parents hear about good days and not just bad days.
But… this year I’ll be teaching mostly math. I’ll have three periods of math, one ELD class, and my homeroom class. How could a clip chart work for them?
I spent the summer pondering my options:
1. Find a way to make a portable clip chart.
2. Use classroom dojo.
3. Use a classroom economy.
I really wanted option 1. Then, it came to me! I’m so excited I figured it out and I’m so excited my grade level team agreed to it.
I’ve created portable clip charts for the three of us out of legal size clip boards. We will each have a spot for the clip board to hang. Our homeroom students will bring the clip chart with them when they go to the next teacher.
I let my teammates choose their style from the regular clip charts in my store.
Our reading teacher chose polka dots and our Project Based Learning teacher chose chevron.
I created new portable versions.
First, I printed. |
Then, I folded them in half. Another option would be to cut it in half. |
Then, I set it up to see if it fit. I decided to just trim the left and right. |
Sides are trimmed and ready to be laminated. |
After laminating them I cut them out. |
I attached the top part of each piece. They hang over each other so that clips can be used on the sides and bottoms. |
Here is the chevron version. I got a little carried away cutting that yellow piece! I’ll have to print a new one. |
Here is the polka dot version. |
Here is one with some mini clips on it. |
I was inspired by Corrina from Surfin Through Second. She has a great surfing themed clip chart. I couldn’t use hers because I needed to make a portable one, but I loved the phrasing she came up with. Be sure to check out her blog!
I think to completely understand you need to see that the flaps lift up giving you lots of room for the mini clips. So, here is a 18 second silent video.
I currently have it hanging on a push pin so it rocked back and forth a bit.
If you’d like a portable behavior clip chart, you can find the polka dot and chevron versions at my TPT store.
